Anal Fissure
A fissure is a small tear that keeps reopening because of the pain–spasm–constipation cycle. Treatment aims to break that cycle so healing can happen.
Symptoms
✔Sharp, cutting pain during and after passing stool
✔Small amount of bright red blood
✔Fear of going to the toilet
✔Spasm lasting minutes to hours after
✔Recurrence after apparent healing
Who gets it
Common in adults with hard stools, in new mothers after delivery, and in people who postpone using the toilet during long working hours.
Common questions
How long does healing take?
Acute fissures often settle in 3–6 weeks. Chronic fissures take longer and are reviewed closely.
Is surgery needed?
Only for chronic fissures that fail conservative management. You would be referred.
What should I change today?
Fibre, water, and a warm sitz bath twice daily. Start those before your first visit.
